# Private release usage for Kotlin

For more information on how to get started with the AWS SDK for Kotlin, [see the documentation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/sdk-for-kotlin/latest/developer-guide/get-started.html).

1. Unzip the `externalPreview.zip` private release artifact
1. Locate the preview version of the service under `/<artifact-path>/m2/repository/aws/sdk/kotlin/<service-id>`
   - It will have a **preview** suffix like: `1.3.85-preview`
   - Note this version as it will be used to configure your Gradle project dependencies.
1. Copy the contents of the `m2` directory to your Maven Local repository directory:
   - By default, the Maven Local repository is located at `${user.home}/.m2/repository/`. Consult Maven's [configuration guide](https://maven.apache.org/guides/mini/guide-configuring-maven.html#Configuring_your_Local_Repository) for more details.
   - Example copy command: `cp -r ./aws-sdk-kotlin-preview/m2/aws ~/.m2/repository`
1. Add `mavenLocal()` to the repositories section of your build file. Consult Gradle's [repository declaration guide](https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/declaring_repositories.html#sub:declaring-local-repository) for more details.
1. Include the preview service client in your Gradle dependencies. For example:

   ```kotlin
   dependencies {
       implementation("aws.sdk.kotlin:s3:1.3.85-preview")
   }
   ```

See the [Getting Started](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/sdk-for-kotlin/latest/developer-guide/get-started.html) page for more information on how to configure project dependencies.
