# Private release usage for Swift

For more information on how to get started with the AWS SDK for Swift, [see the Developer Guide.](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/sdk-for-swift/latest/developer-guide/getting-started.html)

These instructions assume you already have either one of the following installed on your development machine, already configured to depend on & use the AWS SDK for Swift:

- A Swift package (i.e. a project which includes a `Package.swift` file at its root.)
- An Xcode project, containing a your own Swift package for testing which consumes a published version of the AWS SDK for Swift.

If you don't yet have an Xcode project or Swift package, or you haven't integrated the AWS SDK for Swift into it yet, please see the Developer Guide linked above for step-by-step instructions.

To use the AWS SDK for Swift Preview Build with the Swift CLI tools:

1. Unzip the `aws-sdk-swift.zip` preview build artifact. A folder named `aws-sdk-swift` will be unzipped.
2. Move the `aws-sdk-swift` folder to your desired location on the local filesystem.
3. `cd` to the root directory of your own Swift package.
4. On the CLI, substituting the path to your `aws-sdk-swift` preview SDK folder:
   `$ swift package edit --path /use/your/path/to/aws-sdk-swift aws-sdk-swift`
The Swift CLI tools will now use your preview SDK instead of the published one.
5. When you are done using your preview build and want to return to using stable AWS SDK for Swift:
   `$ swift package unedit aws-sdk-swift`

To use the AWS SDK for Swift preview build in the Xcode IDE:

1. Unzip the `aws-sdk-swift.zip` preview build artifact. A folder named `aws-sdk-swift` will be unzipped.
2. Move the `aws-sdk-swift` folder to your desired location on the local filesystem.
3. Open your own Xcode project or Swift package in Xcode.
4. Follow Apple's Xcode docs for [Editing a package dependency as a local package](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/editing-a-package-dependency-as-a-local-package), but instead of checking out your local package dependency from Git, use the `aws-sdk-swift` folder you just unzipped.
